Are You Suffering from Dental Fear?

Most people have some degree of fear when going to the dental office. I have found that this generally comes from:

  • Past experiences
  • Fear of the Unknown
  • Fear of losing personal control of your environment
  • Good natured kidding by relatives or friends
  • Movies and TV jokes

One of the best things you can do is to express your concern and tell the dental personnel about it. With this in mind, the office can adjust their treatments to fit your needs.

When clear explanations are given by the dental personnel as to what is going to be done during the appointment, some patients find it to be less stressful. Some patients do not want to know what is being done and that’s ok. One size does not fit all, and treatment needs to be tailored to your individual needs.

Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) is a safe, effective agent for patients with mild fear. For severely fearful patients an oral sedative has been an effective aid in helping patients to relax, thereby reducing their fear.

All in all there are many methods for helping a person to overcome dental fear. Dentistry has come a long way in making procedures more comfortable but let’s face it, the dental office is not everyone’s favorite place to be.

The best a patient can do is to seek out an office that will empathize with them and work towards reducing their fears.
